Apurba K Baruah, (b. 1947) M. A PhD, a former Dean of School of Social Sciences and a former Head of the Department of political Science is currently a Professor of Political Science in NEHU, Shillong, Meghalaya, India. He was educated in the University of Dibrugarh (M.A) and Punjab University (PhD). Dr. Baruah has been teaching Post Graduate students for the past 39 years and has been supervising PhD and M.Phil students for the past three decades.
Dr. Baruah’s current areas of interest are- ethnic conflicts, tribal traditions and democratic governance, youth movements, human rights and political theory. He has been a member of many academic and other institutions related to social science research. He is currently a member of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi. He has also been a member of the Indo-Russian Joint Commission on Social Science Research. He was the Founder Secretary, former vice President and Life Member of the North East India Political Science Association (NEIPA). He is also the Founder Secretary and a life member of the North East India Social Science Congress.
Dr. Baruah has completed 13 research projects including a major project in the crisis states programme of the London School of Economics and the “Report on the Status of Social Sciences in North East India in the Last Decades of the 20th Century” for the Social Science research Council, New York. Dr. Baruah has coordinated the National Election Surveys in North East India for the years 1996, 1998 and 1999. He has coordinated the ALTUS Research on Police Stations in North East India. He has also written the paper on the sixth schedule areas for the National Commission for the Review of the Constitution.
Apart from his research and academic commitments, Dr. Baruah has also held many positions with editorial responsibility. He was the founder editor of the North East Quarterly, The General Editor of North East India Studies, a member of the editorial board of the Indian Journal of Human Rights and the Journal of the Indian Political Science Association. He has edited the Proceedings of the North East India Political Science Associaton for five years and has acted as a Referee of the Journal of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla, Punjab Journal of Politics, Chandigarh and The Journal of Policy Research, New York.
Dr. Baruah has seven books (four in English and three in Assamese) and 50 articles in Research Journals and Magazines. His better-known publications are – Systems Analysis In Political Science, Social Tensions in Assam, Ethnic Identities and Democracy. The London Scholl of Economics and Political Science has Published two of his working papers –Tribal Traditions and Crises of Governance in North-East India, With Special Reference to Meghalaya (Destine, London, March, 2003) and Ethnic Conflicts and Traditional Self-Governing Institutions: A Study of Laitumkhrah Dorbar (Destin, London, ,January, 2004)He has written extensively for daily newspapers and weeklies like The Deccan Herald, The Statesman, The Telegraph, The Shillong Times (English ) and Pratidin, Sadin, Nilachal (Assamese). Baruah has visited University of WittsWatersand, Johannesburg; London School of economics and Political Science, London and the Altus, the Hague to present papers in seminars. |
