History

The Department of Information Technology (IT) instituted in the year of 2006, under the School of Technology, NEHU, funded by MHRD, Govt. of India, with a prime focus to impart quality, career-oriented engineering education in order to produce bright technologist from different parts of the country.

Profile

The Department is currently offering four years B.Tech. degree programme  in Information Technology. The core part of the curriculum embodies scientific and engineering knowledge basic to the profession. In addition to the core courses the programme also incorporates current and emerging technologies relevant to the field of IT. To tackle unknown engineering problems, the syllabus has been designed by balancing various core, specialized and elective courses. The syllabus also includes several practical papers and challenging projects. The curriculum is also enriched with management papers to give an exposure to student in the field of corporate management.

Infrastructure Facilities

Currently the Department has three well-equipped state-of-art computer laboratories namely, Advanced Computing Lab , Basic Computing Lab 1 and Basic Computing Lab 2 housing 180 state-of-the-art desktop and servers with latest configuration. All the computers are inter-connected to various high-end servers running Operating Systems like Windows 2003/8, Linux, and Sun Solaris and backed by 60 KVA power backup.
All the Laboratories of the Department are connected through high speed Fiber Optics and Cat 6 cable. 8 Mbps Internet connectivity is available in the Department. All the class rooms are equipped with digital teaching aids like LCD projectors.

Recently the Department has installed the following hardware in laboratories:
  1. IBM Blade Center E with 4 Blades ( 2 nos.  Power6 JS 12 & 2 nos. Xeon Quadcore HS 21) 8 GB RAM, 3 TB of SAN storage.
  2. HP Proliant  ML350G4p: Intel Xeon 3.0 GHz HT ,  2 MB level 2 Cache, Intel E7520 Chipset, 1 GB SD RAM, 2x72GB HDD.
  3. Dell Optiplex 755 (60 nos.) with Intel Core 2 Quad, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, 19” TFT, Intel Pentium4 (40 nos.); 3 GHz, Chipset Intel i915 GL, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB SATA HDD, 17” TFT, AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core (20 nos), 5600+, AMD 690G Chipset, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB SATA HDD etc.
  4. Sun Fire X2200 M2 Server with 2x Dual Core AMD Opteron 2218 Processors, 8GB DDR, 2x500 GB SATA HDD, Solaris 10 64 Bit OS
  5. Client: Sun-Ray 2 Thin Client (60 nos.).
  6. LAN TRAINER, i-Security, Digital kit etc.
  7. 30 KVA UPS

Training & Placement Cell

Placement of students to be graduated in July ‘2010 is going on in full swing.  Several organizations/companies like Indian Airforce, Tata Tele Services Limited (TTSL), Bahniman Group of Companies, Maventic Systems, Bangalore visited the School of Technology campus for recruitment and already several students have got selected and many students are in the various stages of selection process. Many companies are expected to visit the campus shortly for conducting on campus placement. Aspire Minds conducted 40 hours soft skill training program for the final year students.

Activities

  • Interactive technical session on Industry Recruitment Process by Mr. D Bhandhari, Sr. Delivery Manager, Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation (CTS), Kolkata on 27th May 2008.
  • HUGHES Communication India Ltd. conducted training cum placement on 12th March 2008 in which 08 students from the 2006 batch have been selected.
  • Prof. Sugat Sanyal from TIFR, Bombay delivered a lecture on “Security Issues in Computer Networks” on 08th December 2007 at 10.30 A.M. at NEHU Science Seminar Hall.

Future Agenda:

  • The Department is planning to start M.Tech. (IT) course in near future.
  • Planning to set up enhanced Computer Graphics and Multimedia & Computer Network laboratories, equipped with state-of-the-art computers and devices.
  • Connecting entire School of Technology with Wi-Fi connectivity.
