Publication Cell
North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong
The NEHU Publication Cell was created with a view to promoting and undertaking publications in various areas and for different target groups. It has mainly concerned itself with the publication of university and undergraduate textbooks, general books, supplementary reading materials, reference books, research works particularly those relating to the North-East, Endowment Lectures delivered in the university and official publications like the university calendar, the Annual Report, NEHU News and The NEHU Journal. NEHU Publications also publishes six higher-secondary textbooks as per a standing agreement with the Meghalaya Board of Higher Secondary Education.
Apart from these, the cell is also functioning as the official printer of the university.
This is a largely self-financing unit and has developed out of a small investment made at the time of its establishment. The press for which there is a separate Press Revolving Fund is also largely self-financing. At present the cell is revamping its different units based on elaborately prepared blueprints and the cell has been undertaking almost all printing jobs emanating from the various departments and centres of the university. On the distribution front, besides opening a sale outlet at Tura Campus, it is also entering into contracts with major distributors in almost all university towns in the North-East and elsewhere in the country.
The work of NEHU Publications may be conveniently grouped into (a) Publications and (b) Printing. The first relates to the Publications of monographs, lectures delivered in the University, printing of new edition and important rare books and also the reprint of some textbooks.
Among the textbooks, reprinting of the Anthology of English Verse and the NEHU Anthology of English Prose were reprinted by the NEHU Publications. Both the textbooks were prescribed for the Class XI and XII course. As in the past year an important printing job was the University’s Annual Report.
Sales during the year relating to categories of books textbooks and general books have been sluggish. However, efforts were made to push up the sales - results awaited. NEHU and National Book Trust, New Delhi organised the Shillong Book Fair in October 1999. Positive responses to the fair has given optimum to make this fair an annual feature.
The Fair was attended by more than 60 publishers and Book-sellers including NEHU Publications.
