About UGC INFONET Digital Library Consortium (Presently merged with e-ShodhSIndhu Consortium for HIgher Education Resources)
UGC INFONET E-journals consortium was formally launched on the concluding day of UGC’s Golden Jubilee celebrations by his Excellency the President of India, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam at Vigyan Bhawan on 28th December 2003. With research work in the country being competitive the demand for journals has increased over the years. But, due to scarcity of funds, Universities/Institutional libraries in the country have been forced to discontinue the subscription to scholarly print journals. This had a great impact on the academia especially the research community in the country. UGC timely initiative of launching such a consortium was a great boon to the academic world in the country, which enables them to access large number of scholarly e-journals from reputed publishers, aggregators and society publications.
Currently, 189 Universities (including NEHU) , which come under the purview of UGC, have been provided
access to these scholarly e-journals which will gradually be extended
to affiliated colleges as well. As per the latest information more than
5000 current e-journals as well as 10 years back files have been subscribed
from 21 reputed academic, society and commercial publishers. The discipline
coverage includes almost all areas of learning like Arts, Humanities,
Social Sciences, Physical and Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences, Computer
Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics etc. with other subject areas to
be added in near future. The access to these valuable resources is based
on authenticated IP address of member universities/instituions and this
service is free of cost at this moment. It is a milestone in the history
of higher education system in India that such a large number of scholarly
e-journals are being made available to the academicians, research scholars
and student community in the country thus making it the largest consortium
successfully executed, implemented and monitored. This innovative programme
is wholly funded by UGC and monitored by INFLIBNET (Information and Library
Network) Centre, Ahmedabad.
Presently, the UGC INFONET DIgital Library Consortium have merged into the e-ShodhSIndhu COnsortium for HIgher Education. For further details you may visit the e-ShodhSIndhu website.
